On its own plays a real recording of the single sound, with no word around it — one speaker per sound. In a word plays a short word spoken by your browser, and the word never contains any of the other choices, so only one answer fits. Nonsense syllables such as ba da ga are not used because speech synthesis cannot be trusted to read spellings like thah or zhah.
